Chip and PIN

Altogether safer

How chip and PIN will benefit you and your business

PIN down the fraudsters

Card fraud costs banks and retailers millions of pounds every year and puts thousands of jobs and businesses at risk, and the card payment industry is determined to fight back. That means that with every card transaction we need to be sure that both the card and the cardholder are genuine.

Reducing counterfeit fraud with chip cards

Since 1996, UK banks have been issuing all their cardholders with chip cards. This meets the first objective - to ensure that the card is genuine - as these cards are much more difficult to copy or alter.

Reducing lost and stolen card fraud with Chip & PIN

All point of sale card transactions will be verified by the cardholder entering a PIN into a keypad instead of signing a receipt. This will meet the second objective - to ensure that the person using the card is the genuine cardholder.
